I am a wife and mother of two children and have an amazing husband who loves and supports me more than I ever thought possible. Our family has experienced living abroad in Japan for many years and now our roots are planted in the beautiful state of Colorado, which we absolutely love. I am also a thyroid cancer patient, survivor and advocate for all lives who have been affected by this disease. I was diagnosed with Stage IVA papillary thyroid cancer on January 26, 2011. This blog is dedicated to all those lives that have been touched by thyroid cancer in one way or another, and in loving memory to all who have lost their battle to this disease. I want to not only share my story, but also to have a place where others can share their stories as well in order to build a community of support so that no one has to face this disease alone.
I work as a Special Education Paraeducator with special needs children which is a profession that I feel is so rewarding in being able to touch the life of students who have challenges and difficulties and being able to help them to succeed. My interests include nutrition and fitness, cooking, gardening and reading – especially suspense novels.
In addition, I dedicate much of my free time volunteering at local hospitals serving as a patient advisor working with patient councils in order to improve patient experiences and quality of life for all cancer patients, survivors and caretakers. My goals are to create and promote awareness of this cancer through education in early detection, the valuable role that nutrition and fitness plays in the life of cancer patients and the importance of thyroid cancer research.

Thanks for your worthy efforts. Both my daughters have thyroid cancer and have had surgery and radiation. They feel poorly much of the time and I am not sure if it is due to their suppression or if it is a different problem. I agree we need more for thyroid cancer and appreciate your challenge. I don’t have any good thought about helping with this disease at the moment, but I appreciate your challenge and will think on this.

Mary sorry that your family has to experience this twice over. You know the best way to help is to spread the word to friends, family and anyone you know about thyroid cancer. It is often portrayed as the “easy cancer” and clearly no cancer is an easy cancer. The more we educate people about what thyroid cancer can and will do to a person perhaps we can move away from this mindset.
